Child-Seat Laws in Louisiana
One of the most important things you can do to prevent injuries to children in auto accidents is to follow Louisiana's child safety belt laws. In particular, RS 32:295 requires child restraint systems for all children age six and under and weighing 60 pounds or less. There are basically three ways that a child needs to be protected while riding in a car, depending on the child's age or weight:
- Rear-facing restraints — for children less than one year old or less than 20 lbs.
- Front-facing restraints — for children between one and four years old or weighing between 20 and 40 lbs.
- Front-facing booster seats — for children between four and six years old, or between 40 and 60 lbs.
