Learn about Health Care Professionals
Anesthesiologists are specialists in Preoperative Medicine, medicine administered during a surgical procedure, specializing in care of a patient prior to, and after surgery. The anesthesiologist plans the anesthetic for the patient and monitors the patient's pain after surgery. The anesthesiologist adjusts the anesthetic, medications, and fluids for a pain free recovery and surgical procedure. They are also responsible for treating any medical problems that might arise during surgery, and are further responsible for managing, and treating changes of the patients breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, before and after surgery.

- Local anesthesia: medicine given to a patient to temporarily stop the sense of pain in a certain area of the body. The Patient remains conscious.
-
Regional anesthesia: numbing of only a portion of the body that is being operated on by an injection of local anesthetic given in the nerves. There are several forms of regional anesthesia such as:

- Epidural anesthesia: similar to a spinal anesthetic and is used for surgery of the lower limbs and during labor and childbirth. Affects the nerves leading away from the spinal cord.
